Glossary

 MOV
MOV is a file extension found on the World Wide Web that denotes a movie or video file in QuickTime format. To play the movie after you download the file, your computer must support the QuickTime format. QuickTime can be downloaded here.
 MP3
Is the file extension for MPEG, audio layer 3. Layer 3 is one of three coding schemes (layer 1, layer 2 and layer 3) for the compression of audio signals. Layer 3 uses perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to remove all superfluous information (more specifically, the redundant and irrelevant parts of a sound signal. The stuff the human ear doesn't hear anyway). Because MP3 files are small, they can easily be transferred across the Internet. Controversy arises when copyrighted songs are sold and distributed illegally off of Web sites.
Many websites and services now sell audio files of albums. The most popular is Apple Computer's iTunes service.
 MPEG
MPEG (or MPG) is an acronym for Motion Pictures Experts Group, an industry committee that is developing a set of compression standards for moving images (such as film, video and animation) that can be downloaded and viewed on a computer.
 Mac OS X Address Book
The Address Book is part Mac OS X. It is used to sort and store email address and information of your family and friends.
 Mirror
A mirror is an FTP server that provides copies of the same files as another server. A mirror site provides an alternate way to access the same files when an FTP site is so popular that the volume of users accessing it keeps others from getting through.
 Modem
Short for Modulator/Demodulator, a modem is a device that allows remote computers to communicate, to transmit and receive data using telephone lines.
 Multimedia
Multimedia refers to the simultaneous use of more than one type of media such as text with sound, moving or still images with music, and so on.
