Back-to-School Season is Here

August 7, 2025

The start of August means many parents are gathering school supplies, figuring out carpool schedules, and picking out clean shirts and new shoes. You might even be making sure your child has a fresh haircut for those first-day-of-school pictures.
Each year, InfoWest gives out over 500 backpacks to school-age children. If you weren’t able to attend our backpack giveaway, here are a few tips to help make the transition from summer vacation to the school year a little easier for your kids.

  1. Start Adjusting Sleep Schedules Early
A few weeks before school starts, begin transitioning your child to an earlier bedtime. Morning bus schedules often require earlier wake-up times than summer days do, so getting used to this change ahead of time will make mornings less stressful.
  2. Double-Check School Supplies
Make sure your student has everything they need before the first day. Involve them in the process and review any supply lists sent by teachers. Shopping early can save time and stress. You can also check Facebook Marketplace or local swap groups for gently used school supplies, uniforms, and other costly items.
  3. Build Excitement
Talk with your child about what they’re most excited for and what they might be nervous about. Discuss favorite subjects, new friends, and fun activities. If they’re starting middle school or high school, help them feel more comfortable about the new environment by sharing your own positive school memories.
  4. Make Sure Your Internet and Tech is Ready
If you don’t have an InfoWest managed router, ensure your router’s firmware and software are up to date. Check that laptops and devices your child will use for school are cleaned up and have enough storage for files. If your student will be online for schoolwork, talk to them about safe internet practices. We can also help you set up parental controls to keep your kids safe online—just give us a call.
  5. Stay Organized
Create a designated spot for homework, backpacks, and school materials. Some families find it helpful to prepare labeled bins or boxes for each day’s schoolwork, especially during the first week of getting back into a routine.
  6. Plan Nutritious Meals and Snacks
Breakfast fuels focus, and healthy after-school snacks keep kids energized for homework or activities. Planning a week’s worth of quick, healthy options can make busy mornings and afternoons less stressful.
  7. Review Transportation Plans
Whether your child walks, bikes, rides the bus, or carpools, review their route and safety rules. If possible, do a trial run before the first day so they feel confident and comfortable.
  8. Set Clear Routines and Expectations
Establish a regular after-school routine that includes time for a snack, homework, free time, and bedtime. Consistent structure can help kids transition more smoothly from summer freedom to school schedules.
