Shakespeare, ski slopes, and a red-rock amphitheater: ten favorites in Festival City.
2 min read

Cedar City sits about half an hour north of St. George and carries a name locals know well: Festival City USA. It’s a small town with a big love of the arts, and it’s one of the places InfoWest brings fiber. Here are ten of our staff’s favorites.
1. Southern Utah University
Walk the campus of Southern Utah University in the heart of town, past historic buildings and outdoor sculptures. Stop in at the Southern Utah Museum of Art, which rotates shows of contemporary and regional work.
2. Brian Head Resort
Brian Head Resort, a short drive up the mountain, offers more than 650 acres of skiable terrain. Groomed runs, terrain parks, and backcountry trails give skiers and snowboarders of every level room to play.
3. Frontier Homestead State Park Museum
Cedar City grew up around iron. The Frontier Homestead State Park Museum tells that story with pioneer wagons, tools, and historic buildings, plus hands-on demonstrations for visitors.
4. Cedar Breaks National Monument
A short drive east climbs to Cedar Breaks National Monument, a colorful amphitheater of hoodoos and cliffs. From over 10,000 feet, the overlooks take in miles of high-desert country.
5. Outdoor recreation
Trails ring the town. Hike or bike in Dixie National Forest, climb in the Red Cliffs area, or camp and fish up Cedar Canyon. Open country starts a few minutes from Main Street.
6. Utah Shakespeare Festival
The Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival is one of the oldest and largest of its kind. Summer and fall bring classic plays, new works, and musicals to Cedar City’s theaters.
7. Parowan Gap Petroglyphs
Just outside town, the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs preserve rock art carved by Native peoples thousands of years ago. An interpretive trail leads to the panels of figures and symbols.
8. Local dining and shopping
Downtown Cedar City rewards a slow afternoon. Sample local restaurants and cafes, then browse the shops and galleries along Main Street for crafts and handmade goods.
9. Iron Mission history
The town’s iron-mission roots run deep. Local museum exhibits trace the early iron industry, Mormon settlement, and Native American history that shaped the valley.
10. Golf
Tee off at Cedar Ridge or the Cedar City Golf Course, both wrapped in mountain and valley views. Well-kept fairways make either a fine spot to work on your swing.
